HALLOWEEN MOUSE

029

It’s that time of year again; apple cider, colorful foliage, pumpkin pie, jack-o-lanterns, bags of rocks..sorry Charlie Brown, it is what it is….and of course Susanna Leonard Hill’s Annual Halloweensie Writing Contest!

You knew I’d enter right? I just can’t help myself. It’s like Susanna and the cider spiced doughnuts know voodoo or something…I just can’t stay away!  And really, why would I want to? A fun Halloweensie contest never hurt anybody, neither did a cider spiced doughnut…unless of course you ate the last cider spiced doughnut and I only found out about it when my coffee mug was full and ready for it’s sweet round friend…

Then. cider. spiced. doughnuts. become. quite. serious…..and. life. threatening.

I’m just sayin!

Cider spiced doughnuts = LOVE

Oh right! The Halloweensie Contest…

Well grab your doughnut and coffee…here we go!

The rules this year were to write a 100 word Halloween story for children that included the words costume, dark, and haunt (or any variant of these), and post between October 26-30th! You can head over to Susanna’s blog here http://susannahill.blogspot.com/ to read all of the entries and vote for your favorites on Monday November 2, 2015.

I went with funny. What can I say….I love humor!

HALLOWEEN MOUSE

“I’m going to be scary for Halloween.”

“You are a mouse, and mice are not scary.”

“But I’m a scary mouse in this costume.”

“You look like a deranged Easter bunny.”

“Well how about my cloak, is my cloak scary?”

“Nope! Not even a tiny little bit. You are a mouse!”

“Fangs! Fangs are scary.”

“Ha! Ha! Ha! Mouse fangs are funny.”

“I want to be scary!”

“There is no way in the dark haunted forest, that a mouse will ever be scary! Mouse? Mouse? Mouse are you there?”

“BOO!  Ha! Ha! Ha! A Halloween mouse is scary after all!”

Sooooooo, What d’ya think?

100 words is quite challenging, especially with bantering characters, and that’s what I love about these contests….they challenge me to think outside of the box and write in ways that maybe I hadn’t thought of before…Thank You Susanna!

Now, one little request… I want to know who you all thought Mouse was having this conversation with! Please leave a comment below even if it’s only one word….I can’t wait to see what answers come up!

Here I’ll go first…

Moose!

    1. Thanks so much Cheryl, glad you liked the story!

  2. clarbojahn says:

Great humor! I thought the mouse was talking to you!! That is a first person narrator.

I loved this idea. People are really coming up with creative ideas. 🙂 Including you. 🙂

  3. Adorable never-say-never mouse!

Loved this story & I agree, these contests are great for “writing outside the box.” I pictured Mama Mouse as the nay-sayer, as, sadly, adults often are.

  5. jdewdropsofink says:

Hmm. I’m going to guess Mouse is talking to a cat. Nice dialogue.

  6. Mice are good at being quiet—and sneaky! aren’t they? Good luck in the contest!

  7. JEN Garrett says:

Maybe Mouse was talking to a spider. This was so fun.

  8. Yes, I agree with Johnell…great dialogue…I think you could go somewhere with this story, Angela…it reminded me of Frog and Toad. And I love that Mouse triumphs in the end. Lots of fun…isn’t Halloweensie great!

  9. Determined mouse. And, I’m liking the dialogue too!

  10. Maria Marshall says:

Fun. I feel the mouse is arguing with you.

  11. marlainagray says:

I thought Mouse was talking to a Mommy or Daddy Mouse. Or a bored Big Brother Mouse. Either way, Mouse is scary!

  12. Gabi Snyder says:

Lots of fun here! I’m glad Mouse had a chance to be scary.

And ooh, did you save me a cider-spiced donut?!

  13. I love Mouse. He tries so hard to be scary. Gotta give that little guy credit! Nicely done.

  14. You had me laughing at the deranged Easter bunny…

  15. Gregory E Bray says:

Depending on the person, mice are scary. =)

  16. I think the mouse is talking to a spider. There are people everywhere scared of spiders. Since spiders are so scary, I think the spider would make fun of a mouse for not being as terrifying as it is.

Fun story. I can imagine a deranged Easter bunny too if this was illustrated.

  17. Very cute 🙂 My first thought is that he was talking to his brother mouse, but it would be funner if it was another animal, like you suggested. Maybe a grumpy chipmunk? Good luck!

  18. You’ve got to admire Mouse’s perseverance in wanting to be scary… and succeeding! So cute and funny – great job, Angie. I think Mouse was talking to a bored cat 🙂 Thanks so much for joining in the halloweensie fun! Oh, and BTW? I LOVELOVELOVE cider donuts!!! 🙂

  19. I was thinking squirrel or some other animal? Good job making me actually go back and THINK about it because at first read, I thought it was mom (been reading too many Sammy Spider books to the wee ones lately) but mom wouldn’t be that kind of snarky.

  20. Cathy Ballou Mealey says:

Pretty sure he was talking to a cider spiced doughnut. 😉

  21. teresamis says:

If it wasn’t the donut as suggested, I’d say — a crow or if I can have a second guess — a scarecrow.

  22. A mighty mouse with a sense of humor-love it 🙂 Good luck!
